Grant Proposal: From Paddock to Press Box - Horse Racing Careers Exploration

Project Summary (Abstract)
This is a hands-on, career-exploration program designed to introduce high school students to the diverse professions within the horse racing industry. Through field trips, guest speakers, job shadowing experiences and media documentation, students will gain real-world insight into careers such as equine veterinary science, sports journalism, race management, horse training, and broadcasting. The project aims to inspire future-ready learners by connecting their passion for horse racing with potential educational and professional pathways.
Statement of Need
While many students are passionate about horses and horse racing, few are aware of the extensive variety of careers available in the industry beyond jockeying and training. Careers and technical education (CTE) programs often overlook niche industries like horse racing, leaving a gap in exposure for students 0 especially those in rural or equine-rich regions. This program will bridge that gap, providing equity in career awareness and helping students envision futures they may never have considered.
Project Objectives
By the end of this program, students will:
-
Identify and describe at least 5 distinct careers in the horse racing industry
-
Participate in a minimum of three real-world career exposure opportunities (i.e. field trips, job shadows, speaker sessions)
-
Create and present a reflection project (i.e. video, blog, photo essay, podcast) demonstrating their career learning experience.
Project Activities
-
Kickoff Seminar: Introduce students to the horse racing inductry through a multimedia presentation and an industry career overview.
-
Field Trips to Horse Racing Venues: Visit local or regional racetracks, training facilities, and veterinary centers. Students will tour facilities and meet professionals across job roles.
-
Career Speaker Series: Host a series of visiting speakers including:
-
A race announcer or broadcaster
-
A trainer or jockey
-
A veterinarian or equine nutritionist
-
A racing journalist or photographer
-
A racecourse operations manager
-
-
Job Shadow Day: Partner with a local track or equine business to allow students to shadow a professional in their area of interest.
-
Capstone Reflection Project: Students will document their experience in a digital format (short video, blog post, podcast episode, or photo journal).
Target Population
This project is designed for high school students (grades 9-12) who have expressed interest in animals, journalism, sports, or careers in agriculture, veterinary science, or media. It is especially valuable in rural areas or regions with historical connections to horse racing.
Evaluation
Success will be evaluated through:
-
Pre- and Post-program surveys assessing student awareness of and interest in horse racing careers

Students participation rates in field trips and job shadowing
-
Quality and completion of final reflection projects, judged using a rubric
